Surf Fitness - Staying Fit
If you are looking a making surfing more than a passing hobby, you are going to need to think about surf fitness. Not only may you need to get into shape, but you will need to stay in shape to enjoy surfing.
Upper Body - Surf Fitness
Push-ups, pull-ups, and butterflies are great exercises to keep your upper body in shape for surfing. These will not only keep your arms in good condition, but it will also keep your back and chest muscles toned too. You will require all of these muscles to surf.
Lower Body
Lunges are ideal exercises for keeping your legs in good shape for surfing. You may also consider incorporating a stability ball into your routine. Being able to keep your balance is a vital part of staying fit. You can't surf if you can't stay on the board.
Torso - Surf Fitness
Rowing and crunches are great exercises for torso. You may not realize how much you use your torso right away. This is going to play a big part in keeping your balance. You will clench and relax different muscles in your torso to shift your weight on the board. Being able to shift your weight without overcompensating is huge for staying on the wave.
Stamina
You will also need to do endurance workouts. Jogging, jumping rope, even swimming for twenty minutes, or more, at a time is a great way to keep the level of stamina you need for surfing. You can surf if you're exhausted, which you will be if you don't have your strength built up. Fighting the water is going to take a toll on your body. Paddling out and riding the waves in over and over are going to take a large supply of energy. Your body will have to be use to supplying that energy or you will tire very easily.
Anyone that surfs can tell you how important surf fitness is. Surfing can be a ton of fun, but it will also be work for your body to perform. If you stay in good condition you should not have any problem having fun on your board. It may seem like it's too much work, but surfing is going to require a lot from your body. You are more likely to have fun if you aren't completely exhausted.
Surf Training may seem like work, but it's a great way to enjoy the sport. It also keeps you healthy. There really isn't any way to go wrong with staying in shape to do something you love.
